How College Rankings Actually Work (And Why They're Broken)

A look inside the methodologies of US News, Niche, and Forbes college rankings, why sponsored rankings mislead students, and how to evaluate schools using verified data instead.

The Short Answer

College rankings are built on subjective formulas, peer reputation surveys, and in some cases direct payments from schools. US News assigns 20% of its score to a peer reputation survey. Niche charges colleges up to $120,000 per year for premium profiles. Forbes has repeatedly changed its methodology, producing wildly different results year to year. No major ranking uses a fully transparent, reproducible formula based solely on verified government data.

How US News Rankings Work

US News & World Report has published college rankings since 1983. Its methodology has changed many times, most recently in 2024 when it removed several long-standing factors.   • Outcomes (40%): Graduation rate, first-year retention rate, graduation rate performance (actual vs. predicted), social mobility (Pell Grant graduate rates).
  • Expert opinion/peer assessment (20%): A survey sent to college presidents, provosts, and admissions deans asking them to rate peer institutions on a 1-5 scale. Many respondents have never visited the schools they rate.
  • Faculty resources (20%): Class sizes, faculty salary, student-faculty ratio, proportion of full-time faculty.
  • Financial resources (10%): Per-student spending on instruction, research, student services, and related educational expenditures.
  • Student excellence (7%): Standardized test scores and high school class standing of admitted students.
  • Alumni giving (3%): Percentage of alumni who donate.

The peer assessment survey is the most criticized component. It rewards name recognition over educational quality. A dean at a small college in the Midwest may rate Harvard, Stanford, and MIT highly because they are famous, not because the dean has personal knowledge of their undergraduate teaching. Schools with aggressive marketing budgets score higher in peer surveys even if their classroom instruction is no different.

How Niche Rankings Work

Niche markets itself as a student-driven platform, but its business model creates conflicts of interest that most families do not know about:

  • Paid premium profiles: Colleges pay Niche up to $120,000 per year for enhanced visibility, featured placement, and lead generation. Schools that pay get larger profile pages, priority placement in search results, and direct access to student contact information.
  • Student review weighting: Niche heavily weights student reviews and survey data. While student experience matters, self-selected online reviews skew toward students with strong positive or negative experiences. The reviews are not verified or controlled for response bias.
  • Letter grades as simplification: Niche assigns A+ through C- grades to schools across categories. These letter grades imply precision that the underlying methodology does not support. The difference between an A and A- school may be statistically meaningless.

The core problem is that Niche operates as both a ranking platform and an advertising platform for the schools it ranks. When the same company that evaluates schools also takes money from those schools for promotional placement, families cannot trust that rankings are independent.

How Forbes Rankings Work

Forbes has published college rankings since 2008, with significant methodology changes that have produced inconsistent results:

  • Alumni salary (20%): Drawn from U.S. Department of Education data and Payscale surveys.
  • Debt (15%): Student loan default rates and average debt.
  • Return on investment (15%): Comparison of cost vs. earnings.
  • Graduation rate (15%): From IPEDS data.
  • Retention rate (10%): From IPEDS data.
  • Academic success (12.5%): Alumni who received prestigious scholarships and awards.
  • American Leaders List (12.5%): Forbes's own measure of whether graduates become "successful" leaders.

The "American Leaders" component is particularly arbitrary. Forbes selects which leadership positions count and how to weight them. Schools that produce investment bankers and tech founders score higher than schools that produce teachers, social workers, or public servants. The metric reflects Forbes's values, not an objective measure of educational quality.

Forbes has also changed its ranking partner multiple times (switching from the Center for College Affordability and Productivity to Wall Street Journal data), making year-over-year comparisons meaningless.

Why Rankings Are Fundamentally Broken

The problems with college rankings go beyond any single publication:

1. Rankings conflate inputs with outcomes

Most rankings reward schools for admitting students who were already likely to succeed (high test scores, wealthy families, educated parents) rather than for adding value to students' lives. A school that takes average students and graduates 75% of them may be doing better educational work than a school that takes elite students and graduates 97% of them, but rankings will always favor the second school.

2. The formulas are arbitrary

Why should peer reputation be 20% of the score? Why not 10% or 30%? Why should alumni giving matter at all? These weights are editorial choices made by magazine staff, not scientific conclusions. Change the weights by even small amounts and the rankings reshuffle dramatically. 3. Schools game the system

Documented gaming tactics include:

  • Encouraging marginal applicants to apply (to lower the acceptance rate)
  • Sending mass marketing materials to inflate application numbers
  • Reclassifying spending as "instructional" to boost per-student expenditure scores
  • Reporting SAT scores only for admitted students, not enrolled students
  • Manipulating class size data by splitting large lectures into smaller discussion sections on paper

In 2023, Columbia University dropped from #2 to #18 in US News after a mathematics professor demonstrated the school had been reporting inaccurate data. 4. The business model creates conflicts

Rankings publications profit from the anxiety they create. US News sells premium access and advertising. Niche charges schools six figures for visibility. Forbes drives traffic and subscriptions. None of these businesses have an incentive to tell families that rankings do not matter much, because that would undermine their own product.

What to Do Instead of Trusting Rankings

If rankings are broken, what should students and families use? Start with the data that rankings are built on, but without the arbitrary weighting:

  1. Look at the raw data. IPEDS and College Scorecard publish the same graduation rates, costs, earnings data, and financial aid information that ranking publications use.   2. Focus on net price for your income bracket. Published tuition is marketing. What matters is what you will actually pay after grants and scholarships. IPEDS breaks net price down by income bracket. Check this for every school on your list.
  3. Compare graduation rates within peer groups. Do not compare a community college to a research university. Compare similar schools to each other. A 75% graduation rate at a school that admits students with average test scores is much more impressive than 90% at a school that only admits top 5% students.
  4. Check post-graduation outcomes. College Scorecard publishes median earnings 6 and 10 years after enrollment, broken down by institution. This tells you more about the economic value of a degree than any subjective ranking.
  5. Visit and talk to current students. No dataset captures campus culture. Visit campus if you can. Talk to current students, not just admissions staff. Ask about academic support, mental health resources, and whether they would choose the school again.
  6. Match to your criteria, not a ranking list. The best school for you is the one that matches your academic interests, financial situation, campus preferences, and career goals. Rankings cannot capture any of that because they do not know you.
